Southeast of Den Helder is a beautiful nature reserve, the Balgzand. The Balgzand is the westernmost part of the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. The area is not freely accessible.
Huge numbers of birds can be found on the Balgzand. Why do those birds come here? They find a table cover here. The mudflat bottom is rich in food such as tidal flats, sea centipedes and all kinds of shellfish. Shrimp and young fish in the water.
