Day of the Wad

In Den Helder there are several activities organized for the Day of the Wad:

Day of the Wad at De Helderse Vallei

De Helderse Vallei is officially located in the Wadden area thus you can discover everything about the Wad at the visitor centre. On the Wadden column in the permanent exhibition, you can find information about the Wad’s special characteristics and its importance for bird migration. For the Day of the Wad, stuffed specimens of the animals that live on the mudflats are exhibited in the Bos atelier and there is information about the animals and plants that live in the Wadden area.

The Wadden walking route can be followed from De Helderse Vallei. The Wadden walking route is more than 1200 kilometres of hiking pleasure along the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site. Walkers can choose to take a long or short route. From De Helderse Vallei it is easy to get on the Wadden walking route.

In addition, there is a large-scale activity at De Helderse Vallei on both days during the Wadden Sea World Heritage Anniversary Weekend. The KNNV organizes various excursions from De Helderse Vallei that day in the hope that it will be possible to spot 1000 plant and animal species on this side of the Wadden area in one day. Participation in the excursions is free and registration in advance is not necessary.

On Modderdag everyone can play outside in the mud and of course... get dirty! The mud feels a bit different than it does on the bottom of the mudflats, but it makes you feel just as dirty.
