Discover the hidden stories of Den Helder during Open Monument Days 2025

Safe and familiar exploration close to home
On Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September 2025, Den Helder once again opens its monumental doors. During the nationwide Open Monument Day, you get the chance to visit buildings that are normally not accessible to the public. This 39th edition focuses on the theme Built to Last. A perfect moment to rediscover the rich history of this maritime city.

Unique places you didn’t know about
Den Helder has more to offer than you might think. Forts, churches, houses, and barracks all tell their own stories. Throughout the weekend, you can join guided tours and listen to captivating storytellers. Learn, for example, how the Defence Line of Den Helder was built to protect the city – and why this military structure still impresses today.

A nautical city full of history and character
As a fortified city by the sea, Den Helder breathes history. Water, wind, and the sea are always nearby. That’s exactly what makes this city unique within the Netherlands. During Open Monument Day, you’ll experience it yourself. Whether you enjoy striking architecture, personal stories, or simply a meaningful walk – there’s something for everyone.

Free entry and open to all
Admission to all participating monuments is free. This makes the weekend an easy and accessible way to enjoy something special. You don’t have to travel far. Whether you come alone, with your partner, or with (grand)children – there are activities for young and old.
