Fort Kijkduin is originally build to defend Den Helder against enemies who wanted to invade the Den Helder sanddike.

In 1996 the fortress was thoroughly restored. Nowadays you can visit the fortress and you will find a North Sea aquarium and a zoological exhibition with the skeleton of Chris the Whale.
