On Saturday, May 24th, bunkers along the Dutch coast will open their doors for one day during the tenth edition of Bunker Day. From Zeeland to the Wadden Islands, you can explore these extraordinary World War II structures between 10:00 and 17:00. In Den Helder and Julianadorp, several unique bunkers offer a glimpse into the past and the story of occupation, war, and liberation.
In Den Helder, you can visit the Kroontjesbunker, the only intact FL250 Flakgruppenkommandostand in the Netherlands. Inside, a glass plotting wall was used to track aircraft movements and relay information to anti-aircraft batteries. Climb the tower for a beautiful view of the dunes.
The nearby Hospital Bunker 638 Sani was used for initial medical treatment during the war. It now holds a small collection of medical tools and shows what a wartime field hospital looked like.
In Huisduinen, the Atlantikwall Centre is located in a former German navy building. The exhibition tells the story of the Atlantic Wall, the war in the Wadden region, and its impact on Den Helder.
In Julianadorp, you can explore one of only two M219 gun bunkers in the entire Atlantic Wall. The massive two-storey structure is now open to the public with an impressive exhibition. The adjacent bunker is now a lookout point over the dunes and sea.
Guided tours are also organized at Fort Harssens and on the historic grounds of Willemsoord. These locations are only accessible with a reservation via www.bunkerdag.nl.
This special edition of Bunker Day marks 80 years of freedom. Throughout the country, there are themed activities, exhibitions, film screenings, guided tours, and re-enactments by actors in historical uniforms. Children can enjoy scavenger hunts and activity booklets.
